Interview:
Swapna Peri: What inspired you to write “Devil In Details,” and how did you develop the intricate plot and psychological themes that run throughout the story?
Shweta Chauhan: Thrill: the joy of writing a murder mystery. I have discovered it only recently and this is what inspires me. About the plot: I started with a vague idea but then plot kept unfolding before my eyes. I can say the ‘plot’ developed itself.
Swapna Peri: The characters Parijat and Deepika are quite unique compared to traditional detectives. What motivated you to create them as ordinary women using their charm and intuition to solve the case?
Shweta Chauhan: When I decided to write a book, I had in mind very clear picture of my detectives. I wanted my protagonists to be ordinary human beings- flawed and relatable, experiencing regular emotions. They are scared, indecisive, sometimes they make impulsive decisions. They cry, and amidst all the chaos and tragedy in their lives they try to be brave, they try to survive. This is how we all navigate through life. I believe this allows readers to connect better with the characters. Parijat and Deepika’s ordinary-ness makes them special. They are not trained detectives, they have no weapons and yet they take up a daring project relying solely on their common sense and presence of mind.
Swapna Peri: Your novel tackles complex themes such as free will, betrayal, and the nature of sin. How do you see these themes resonating with readers in today’s world?
Shweta Chauhan: This is the theme readers can relate to because we experience these emotions everyday. The only difference is that not everyone we meet is a murderer. But one of them is because he or she was overpowered by one particular emotion. I have tried to portray this complex issue in a simple manner. Why people behave the way they do? This is intrigues me. How a person can go to such extreme length? Killing is an extreme behaviour, and what fascinates me is how can someone become so sure and selfish.
Swapna Peri: “Devil In Details” features numerous twists and turns. Can you share your writing process for developing such a fast-paced narrative while maintaining depth and detail?
Shweta Chauhan: I’ll take that as a compliment but the truth is that it took me two years to write this book. So this fast-paced narrative is the outcome of a slow and steady process. I write and then re-read my own draft. Strategy is to delete insignificant details and add twists at just the right point.
Swapna Peri: The philosophical exploration in your book sets it apart from typical thrillers. How do you balance engaging storytelling with deeper philosophical questions about human nature and morality?
Shweta Chauhan: My focus is on the story. Everything happening around my characters must have a reason. This is where philosophy comes in action: to justify their behaviour. Morality comes a little later, when you want to pass judgment on someone. Philosophy and morality are the pillars that make my story strong.
Swapna Peri: What do you hope readers take away from “Devil In Details,” and how do you envision it impacting their understanding of truth and justice?
Shweta Chauhan: I truly hope readers will enjoy it. That is all I want. I write for fun and I want my readers to have fun. I don’t want to preach them about truth or justice or morals.
Swapna Peri: What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
Shweta Chauhan: Solitude. And I appreciate it if people around me do not enquire about the progress of the book.
Swapna Peri: What books do you enjoy reading? Are there any books or authors that inspired you to become a writer?
Shweta Chauhan: My preferred genre in fiction but I read all kind of books: fiction, non fiction, poetry, novels. I love Agatha Christie and now I understand that she is the one who made me write murder mysteries.
